Send tax-exclusive prices to Xero

Shopify holds your prices with tax included, and by default that is what reaches Xero: each invoice line shows the tax-inclusive price and Xero records the tax as part of it. We can send net prices instead, so the line shows the price before tax and Xero adds the tax on top.

If all you want is for Xero to display amounts tax-exclusive, that is a setting inside Xero, and that's Show amounts as tax exclusive in Xero invoice walks through it. Ask for this one only when you want the amounts themselves sent as net.

How it Works

For each line we work out the price before tax, send that along with the line’s tax rate, and let Xero add the tax back on. The total, the tax and the amount your customer paid all stay the same — only the way the line is expressed changes.

Discounts and shipping move with it

Discounts are part of the same conversion. A discount left tax-inclusive while the price becomes net leaves the invoice short by the tax on that discount, so when we switch this on we switch the discount half on with it. Shipping is a separate switch, because some stores want it converted and others do not.

If this is already on and an invoice does not match the Shopify order total, send us the order number — that gap is the usual symptom of one half being off.
